Digital Situation Report: Fun Step for Heritage Disaster Mitigation

Abstract of paper.

Recently, Indonesia became one of countries that experienced a boom in the use of social/networking media, especially Facebook and Twitter. This phenomenon allowed for the emergence of citizen journalism that, consciously or not, represents a new model of documentation by the public; known as crowd-sourcing.

When someone visits a cultural heritage site, he would typically take picture of himself with the heritage objects as the background. Then he will upload it to the social media, and then write a complete description about it. Rather than being something like narcissistic picture only, it is a very first-fun-easy-step to preserves cultural heritage.

By sending it to the internet, consciously or not, he has made the heritage inventory
process. He is reporting the latest situation of heritage object, through digital media. In the future, this document will be invaluable. If an earthquake destroys a traditional neighbourhood, for example, this documentation will be useful for the recovery, restoration and reconstruction. Furthermore, it will become memorable artefacts that will not extinct.

Do regular updates about the latest situation of every single heritage objects in the country is not easy for the government. This is the reason why crowd-sourcing is needed. Recorded information (texts, maps, pictures and videos) on the internet is easily accessible to the public, it is not the same with data which collected by the government. Internet is dynamic, allowing everyone to use and/or add information, digitally.
